Flow Meter

Guidelines in choosing a Flow Meter

In choosing a fuel flow meter, the most important characteristic is to know the system flow rate. Flow Meters work based on the flow rate of a system. Flow rate of a flow meter depends on many factors, pipe or hose diameter size and its length or distance, tank volume, and height of the storage tank all contribute to a system’s flow rate for non pump or gravity driven system. Some system also have a pump installed which is the one driving and pumping the fuel out of a system. These type of assembly usually have a more constant flowrate. Different flow meters have different flow rates as designed. Some flow meters have lower flow rates and some flow meters have higher flow rates. Flow meters also come in Analog or Digital display. Analog flow meters are usually more easy to maintain than digital ones, digital ones require battery or external power to operate. However, digital flow meters are more accurate and have better precision. Digital flowmeters also have fraction of a liter display (decimal place) which makes measurement of low volume discharge more accurate. Analog flow meters are usually used as a guide only, it is also not recommended for commercial fuel resale.

How do you check for the flow rate of a system without any measuring equipment or tools? You can use the steps below to look for a suitable flow meter.
Normally, you can use a water gallon (4 liter or 6 liter) container.
Note the volume of the container that can fill the container.
Fill up the container and measure the time to fill up the container.

With the volume of the container, divide it by the time to fill up the container either in seconds, minutes or hours to get the result in Liter per seconds (LPS), Liter per Minute (LPM) or Liter per Hour (LPH), for Liter per second, multiply the result to 60 to convert the result to Liter per minute, while for Liter per hour, divide the result by 60 to convert it to Liter per minute.

Some helpful conversion factors:

60 seconds = 1 minute

60 minutes = 1 hour

1 US gallon = 3.79 liter approx 4 liter

1.5 gallon = 5.68 liter approx 6 liter

1 liter = 1000 ml

1 US quart = 946 ml

1 liter =  33.814 oz
